Call rates vary from country to country and network to network. Please call the Customer Care team on 13 30 61 for current international roaming rates.

Compatibility

Different mobile networks use different frequencies which can mean your handset may not work in the country you are visiting. Check your mobile user manual to find out which frequency your mobile operates on.

Single / Dual-band (GSM) Most European GSM networks use 900MHz and 1800MHz frequencies and for this reason majority of Australian handsets fall into the category of being dual band ie 900MHz and 1800MHz compatible.
Tri-band (GSM) Some networks in regions such as the USA, Canada, the Caribbean and South America use the 1900MHz frequency. To use these networks you will require what is called a tri band handset. This handset allows you to use not only the 900MHz and 1800MHz frequencies but also the 1900MHz frequency. Check your handset user manual to find out if your handset is tri-band and can operate on the 1900MHz frequency.
Quad-band (GSM) Networks that operate on the 850MHz frequency are not common however some Southern and Central American networks do use this 'band'. Few handsets on the market today are 'Quad' Band and enable access to 850MHz networks.
3G Mobile networks in Japan require a 3G handset, which is compatible with Japan’s 3G networks. To use the 3G network, you require a handset that operates on 3G (UMTS) technology specially designed for Japanese networks.

Arrival

Once you arrive at your destination switch on your mobile to access the local network – this may take longer than usual. You are likely to receive a free TXT message from the local network provider welcoming you to the country. While roaming make sure your network search mode is set to automatic on your phone. Refer to the TransMOBILE user guide for further information.

Local calls

To make calls to the country you are in dial the local phone number. You may also need to dial the area code.

International calls

  • For landlines dial + [country code] [area code – omit the first ‘0’] [phone number]
    Eg Australia +61 2 0000 0000
  • For mobiles dial + [country code] [mobile number - omit the first ‘0’]
    Eg Australia +61 400 000 000

Receiving calls

You can receive calls as you would normally. People can contact you by dialling the same number as usual. In certain countries you may not be able to view Caller Line Identity (CLI).

Please be aware that you are charged when receiving an international phone call whilst using international roaming overseas. Text messages are a cheaper alternative to receiving an international phone call as you are not charged to receive text messages internationally.

Accessing voicemail

In most countries you can listen to your voicemail in exactly the same way as you do in Australia. Dial 121 or alternatively dial +61 414 121 to retrieve your messages.

You will be prompted to enter your PIN which was set up when you activated your Voice Mail account. If you are unsure of your PIN please call the Customer Care team on 13 30 61.

Please note when accessing voicemail services you will be charged the cost of an international roaming call to Australia. To avoid excessive charges it is highly recommended to deactivate all types of call diverts on your mobile phone while you are on roaming.
