Our network

We have a range of different broadband types available on the TransACT network to make sure you can be connected no matter where you are.

In the world of ADSL, VDSL and FTTP, knowing which broadband is which can be difficult.  Our simple guide below explains the different types of networks.  Still have questions? Check out our network FAQs >

ADSL and ADSL2+

What is ADSL?

Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) allows for data transmission over copper telephone lines. It does this by using frequencies that are not used by a voice telephone call.

Thanks to a splitter, or DSL filter, a single telephone connection can be used for both ADSL service and voice calls at the same time.

ADSL2+ is faster than basic ADSL.

VDSL and VDSL2

What is VDSL?

Our very-high-bitrate DSL (VDSL) network is a fibre-to-the-node network (part fibre and part copper) that allows for high-speed transmission of data over short lengths of copper cables between TransACT’s network nodes and our customer’s premises.

VDSL can support high bandwidth applications such as TV, as well as telephone services and general internet access, over one connection.

VDSL2 is like VDSL, only faster because it uses upgraded equipment between a house and TransACT.

FTTP

What is FTTP

Fibre-To-The- Premise (FTTP), also known as Fibre-To-The- Home (FTTH), is a fibre internet connection that connects directly to a home or premise through a box on the outside the building.

TransACT’s own state-of-the-art FTTP network began in 2007 in the then new Estate of Forde, since this time TransACT’s FTTP has grown to cover the new Estates of Bonner, Crace, Casey 2 (Springbank Rise) and Franklin stage 2 (Bridgewater) including the medium density unit developments along the Flemington Road corridor.

TransACT’s FTTP will also be available in the soon to be released Estate of Harrison 4 in Canberra’s north and within the estates in the Molonglo Valley commencing with North Weston (McCubbin Rise) followed by Coombs and Wright.

Benefits of FTTP

Our Fibre-To-The- Premise (FTTP) technology delivers state-of-the-art broadband to customers today.

Skydata

What is Skydata?

Unlike VDSL, ADSL and FTTP, Skydata broadband is wireless internet.  Rather than using a copper or fibre connection, the Skydata service is delivered by a wireless signal that is transmitted from a radio tower to a receiver on the rooftop of your home. This means many homes that weren't able to access an internet connection can now connect and enjoy the benefits of broadband.

Our Skydata service is currently available to selected customers in Amaroo, Charnwood, Dunlop, Franklin, Gungahlin, Harrison, Ngunnawal, Nicholls and Palmerston.

Mobile Broadband

What is Mobile broadband?

Our mobile broadband gives you the same benefits as regular broadband with the added benefit of mobility on the 3G network.  Mobile broadband uses the same technology as your mobile phone to connect to the internet but does so through a data connection on your phone, not a voice call.

The future - now

We’re always looking for ways to enhance the products and services we provide to you.

In Victoria, we recently upgraded our Hybrid Fibre Coaxial (HFC) cable networks in Geelong, Ballarat and Mildura to state-of-the-art DOCSIS 3 standards.

In Canberra, we’re currently upgrading parts of our Very-high-speed Digital Subscriber Line (VDSL) network to VDSL2.

This will deliver faster speeds to those areas and we’re currently upgrading hundreds of homes per month to VDSL2.

If you’re an existing customer in a VDSL area we’ll contact you directly if you’re going to be upgraded to VDSL2.

If you’re not sure what services are available in your area, check our service availability tool.
